No definite view on Setu without any survey: Soni

Does Soni read English? The Madras HC Judgement of 19 June 2007 was a polite request that ASI conduct a survey on Rama Setu and declare it as a national monument.
More than one crore people have signed a petition requesting for the declaration of Rama Setu as national monument. This was submitted to His Excellency the then President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. Has Soni not read this petition?
Why was the Marine wing of Archaeological Survey of India not involved in the first place when the Setu project was evaluated?
Further, the tradition holds and the received social memory notes that there is a third shivalingam on Rama Setu itself. One is in Rameshwaram; the second is in Tirukkedeeshwaram (Talaimannar). It is the job of ASI to find and locate this third shivalingam installed by Shri Rama according to Skanda Purana. Yes, do the survey, do it quickly and declare Rama Setu as world heritage and Rameshwaram as divyakshetram
No definite view on Sethu without any survey: Soni

New Delhi (PTI), Feb. 1, 2008 The Hindu: In a move that could put the controversial Sethusamudram project in cold storage, Culture Minister Ambika Soni on Thursday said the ASI could not give a definite view on the project without undertaking some kind of survey.

She also said the government would take into consideration various inputs, including the security concerns expressed over the project, before it takes a decision on it.

“The Archaeological Survey of India cannot give a view definitely on whether this can be declared as site of national importance or not without undertaking some kind of survey,” Soni said.

Her remarks came in the context of fresh rows over the project, including security concerns expressed by the Navy chief and the Coast Guard Director General.

“These would be inputs before the Government before it takes a decision or goes ahead,” Soni said.

Soni said the ASI has never undertaken any kind of survey or exploration. “So it is very difficult for us to give any opinion based on first hand knowledge,” she said.

Besides, the Minister insisted that the such a survey was “not an easy job, not a quick job” and recalled that the survey at Nagarjunakunda had taken five to six years.

Noting that the Madras High Court had asked the Government to file an affidavit explaining the cultural significance of Ram Setu and also asked whether it had conducted any archaeological survey of the bridge, she made it clear that so far no one has asked the ASI to conduct such a survey.

SSCP: Swamy cites CG chief’s opposition
Chennai, Jan. 31 Janata Party President Dr Subramanian Swamy today quoted Director General of Coast Guard Admiral Homi Contractor as having said that the Sethusamudram Shipping Channel Project (SSCP) was a security threat to the nation.
In a statement here, he said Admiral Contractor’s warning had confirmed his allegations to this effect, made earlier in Madras High Court and subsequently in the Supreme Court.Admiral Contractor’s reported remarks came close on the heels of similar views expressed by Naval chief Admiral Sureesh Mehta.”I would demand that the Prime Minister intervene and order for scrapping of the project forthwith,” Dr Swamy said, adding that Rs 800 crore that have been spent so far, had been done at the behest of Union Shipping Minister T R Baalu without security clearance from the armed forces and intelligence agencies.Mr Baalu went ahead with the project even without obtaining prior clearance from the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board and hence the amount should be recovered by prosecuting him, Dr Swamy said.Meanwhile, Mr Baalu, in a brief chat with newspersons at the Trade Centre here, said those who opposed the SSCP were enemies of the country and asserted that the project would be implemented at any cost.He added that those trying to stall the project should realise that they were acting against the interests of Tamil Nadu and the country. – Bureau Report
