In the face of these statistics on the website, it is surprising to see the reported statement of Hon’ble Shipping, Road Tansport and Highways Minister Shri TR Baalu: “Dredging is continuing in the Palk Bay.” See news report below.

Baalu refuses to join issue with RSS on Ram Sethu

By KS Narayanan

New Delhi, Jan. 2: Shipping, Road Transport and Highways Minister T.R. Baalu on Wednesday refused to be drawn into any controversy as he parried questions about the objections raised by Sangh Parivar on the Sethu Samudram Canal Project (SSCP). “ I am not willing to react to those who are not connected to political parties. I am too small a person to react to issues raised by such a tall religious leader.” Baalu said when asked about RSS leader KS Sudarshan’s comments that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is under pressure from DMK – a partner in the UPA Government to implement the project.

Addressing a rally in the Capital on Sunday, the RSS chief had asked the Prime Minister not to succumb to the pressure of the DMK to execute the project.

“Dredging is continuing in the Palk Bay. We are waiting for the Supreme Court’s order on the issue. We will continue our work after the verdict,” Baalu said. The Apex Court, by an interim order in August 2007, had allowed the project to continue while staying the demolition of Ram Sethu. The case comes up for hearing on January 16.
