NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday refused to hear a petition opposing the ongoing dredging activity for the Sethusamudram shipping canal project.
A Bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan said that the petition will be heard along with the main petition, scheduled to be taken up in January 2008.
The court refused to hear any submission including the allegation that the dredging activity was also continuing around the Rama Setu or Adam’s Bridge. The PIL was filed by an NGO, Samanta.
The apex court on September 14 had allowed the Centre to review the project after it withdrew its controversial affidavit questioning the existence of Lord Ram and mythical bridge Ram Setu.
Earlier, the court on August 31 in an interim order had put on hold the demolition of Rama Setu, situated south-east off Rameshwaram, connecting the Talaimanar coast of Sri Lanka.
It had allowed the dredging activity for the project to the extent that it did not in anyway cause any damage to the Rama Setu or Adams Bridge.
